Why you attract the wrong people (and it feels like love)

“The heart that goes through the most can sometimes confuse chaos for connection.” ~ Unknown

I remember the exact time I knew something was wrong.

We talked for three weeks. Every conversation made me float or distort, never … okay. Whether he said something that made me feel like the most sympathetic person on earth, or he was quiet for two days and I spent those two days rethinking everything I said, looking for what I had done wrong.

And when he came back, I felt Relief. The rush of “he’s back, everything is fine” is so intense it almost feels fun.

I told my friend, “I have never felt this kind of chemistry with anyone.”

She looked at me carefully and said, “Are you sure it’s chemistry?”

I do not understand what she meant then. I do now.

The feeling that we do wrong to love

Here’s something no one tells you about toxic attraction: It does not feel toxic. It feels electric.

Check your phone regularly. High when they send a message. Anxiety when they are not. How your entire nervous system seems to revolve around a person.

We call it chemistry. We call it passion. We say things like “I’ve never felt this way before” and we mean it completely.

But this is a fact that has changed everything for me: intimacy is not the same as intimacy. And chemistry is not always a sign that someone is good for you. Sometimes it is a sign that something familiar is being triggered inside you.

Something old. Something incurable.

Why chaos can feel like home

For a long time I thought I was unlucky in love. I continued to meet men who were not emotional, men who ran hot and cold, men who made me feel great and invisible in one week.

I think the problem is They..

Then one day, sitting down with a journal I started saving, I wrote down a question I avoided: What do all these relationships have in common?

The answer made me sit back in my chair.

Me.

Not because I broke or broke my love story. But because of somewhere on the street, I realized that love looks like this. That love comes from uncertainty. That love requires me to prove myself waiting for warmth.

When you grow up around emotional inconsistencies – loving parents one day and cold the next, a house where love is unpredictable – your nervous system learns to read That pattern. As usual. As is familiar. Like safe even if it is not.

So when you meet someone who is calm, stable, and kind, something in you whispers,This is boring. There are no sparks. ”

And when you meet someone who makes your heart run with uncertainty? Your body speaks. “This is it. This is love. ”

It is not love. It’s recognition. Your nervous system has found something that matches your first experience and is as bright as coming home.

Signs I explained away

When I look back, the signs are from the beginning.

The first time he canceled, the last minute I told myself he was busy.

The first time he said something and laughed, I told myself I was too sensitive.

The first time he disappeared for three days without explanation and came back as if nothing had happened, I was so relieved he came back, I never asked about the disappearance.

I have a hundred explanations. A thousand small justifications. My friend will raise an eyebrow and I will protect him before they finish the trial.

Because this is a confusing chemistry story: it doesn’t just make you feel. It makes you. Think In a certain way. It makes you very careful, always try to decode, always try to guess, always try to be the perfect version for yourself so that the warmth will remain the same.

You focused on They. That you stop paying attention to You.

To the bonds of your belly that appeared on the third day.

For the voice behind your head Something went off.

For your own version, which is a bit slow to quiet.

One evening he said something he was not happy about that I cared about. It is a small thing, a kind of story that is difficult to explain to others. But I felt it fall on my chest.

And I see myself smiling and changing topics.

Then drive home, I think about that time. The way I swallowed what I felt so naturally was automatic. That way I did not even hesitate.

When does this become what I do?

That question broke what was open in me.

I realized that I was so busy pursuing such a high level of connection that I did not even notice how much it cost me. My voice. My instinct. Self-confidence.

Chemistry does not bring out the best in me. It is teaching me to disappear gradually.

What a healthy feeling (and why it scares me)

After that relationship ended – and it took longer than the end I wanted to acknowledge – I met someone who just heard consistently. Quiet. Without games.

My first reaction was skepticism.

Why is he so stable? What is he hiding? Where is the stress, the electricity, the push and pull?

I almost walked away from something really good because it did not match the pattern my nervous system had learned to chase.

That’s when I realized: I’m not looking for love. I’m looking for Feelings Of love as I used to know. And all I know is that anxiety is uncertain and conditional.

Healthy love does not feel like medicine. It feels like it can breathe.

It took me a while to stop waiting for this. To stabilize, feel excited. To believe that the absence of chaos is not a red flag. It’s the whole point.

What does this mean for you?

If you have ever said, “I do not feel like a spark with a good person,” I want you to hear it gently but clearly: The fire you are pursuing may not be a sign of love. It could be a sign of an injury still running the program.

It does not hurt you. It makes you human. It makes you a person with a heart to learn to live in any kind of environment and now have to learn something new gently.

Here’s the place to start:

Notice the pattern.

The next time you feel addicted to someone, pause. Ask yourself, ‘Is this a thrill or an anxiety with good things on top?

Curious about your background.

Relationships That Form Your First Thoughts About Love Are They Safe? Are they consistent? How did you learn to feel love?

Stop believing in intensity as a measure of consistency.

The most important relationship in your life should feel safe, not just exciting.

Find out what your nervous system is really telling you.

Sometimes the feeling of “tiredness” makes your body relax. And relaxing your body is a very good sign.

And if you acknowledge yourself in this – in the pursuit of distant explanations, chemistry that actually feels but has made you spit – know that the pattern can be broken.

It does not require you to give up any passion or depth or real relationship.

It just requires you to understand Why You are drawn to what you are downloaded to.

Because when you see it, you can not see it. And when you can not see it, you can finally choose differently.

That transition – from the pursuit of chemistry to cognition – is where healing begins. And it starts with an honest question: What if the love I was looking for should not feel so hard?
